Developing a good oral hygiene routine

Taking care of your teeth does not have to be complicated and maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent problems before they develop. And preventing problems before they occur is much less painful and expensive than treatment after the fact. With just a few simple steps every day your smile will reap the benefits of a consistent oral hygiene routine.

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth clean and healthy and to combat the build-up of plaque on the teeth.  Plaque is the combination of food and bacteria that sticks to teeth. It creates acids that if left on the teeth cause tooth decay and eats away at protective enamel. Plaque is also an irritant to gums and can lead to, cavities, tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. A good oral hygiene routine works to remove plaque and assist in maintaining overall good mouth health.

What does a good oral hygiene routine look like?

Brush your teeth

Brush twice a day for approximately 2 minutes spending equal amount of time in each part of your mouth. Make sure to brush all sides and surfaces of your teeth. Use a soft headed toothbrush. Hard bristle brushes are overly abrasive on teeth enamel. Electric toothbrushes can be useful for people with motor disabilities or arthritis but used properly a manual toothbrush can be just as effective.

Use an American Dental Association approved fluoride toothpaste. Look for the ADA seal on the box. The seal ensures the product has been tested and the ingredients effective. Choose one you like and will use. Various flavors and gel or paste are matters of personal preference but do not contribute to toothpaste’s efficacy.

Floss

Flossing is an important step not to be skipped. Flossing assists in removing plaque and food particles that a toothbrush can’t reach. It is especially important for gum health and in removing plaque below the gum line.  Floss once a day making sure to go around each tooth individually and below the gum line.

Avoiding Excessive Snacking

Sugary foods contribute greatly to tooth decay. The sugar in snacks is consumed by the bacteria in your mouth and is converted to the acids that erode enamel. The less sugar you consume the less acid there is and the better for overall oral health. If you do have sugary snacks ensure to either drink some water immediately after or rinse your mouth with water to flush some of the acids away.

Regular Check Ups

Regular brushing and flossing at home will greatly contribute to your oral health and wellbeing but it is important to see your dentist on a regular basis.  Any dentist in round rock can check for problems that you cannot see or feel. The time between checkups will be determined by the dentist. With a good oral hygiene routine and a healthy mouth you might only need to go once a year.
